I generally use the broadest definition: can I point to a moment in the story where they are enemies? And can I point to a moment when they love each other. How do you guys define the trope, and how do you think it is done well?

I've never really been that picky about it. Some people think it isn't enemies to lovers unless they hate each-other's guts until the very, very last page but others like it when they make up (or just have the hots for one another) by the end of the first act. Same for mafia books (usually new adult w/ cws) some people think violence is what makes the enemies, some people see it as wrong and not in the trope. Some commenters have said the whole Cruel Prince-like knife to the throat isn't enemies to lovers and is abusive, but other have said that's what makes it enemies rather than just two people disagreeing or rivals. I've been seeing a few posts on this sub and r/RomanceBooks where a book is claimed to be 'enemies to lovers' and people disagree over if the book actually counts for that trope.
